Connecting the Built Environment Data Solutions ecosystem

CBEDS makes the standards, tools and research that already power the built environment easier to find, link and build on, turning scattered effort into shared progress. This work is governed by UCL academics.

What is CBEDS

CBEDS, the Centre for Built Environment Data Solutions, coordinates the sector's data solutions ecosystem.

It spans the whole ecosystem, from standards, tools and ontologies to research, regulation and live projects, improving how existing efforts find, relate to and build on one another.

The Challenge

A complex system, pulling in every direction

The built environment is an incredibly complex and emergent system. Collectively, we are being asked to address digital transformation, sustainability, circularity, AI adoption, and the implementation of digital twins. In response, the sector has created new tools, processes and initiatives to meet these challenges.

Thousands of standards, digital tools, research projects, industry initiatives, and data solutions already exist. But many operate in isolation, making it difficult to discover, understand, and connect existing efforts. This fragmentation creates duplication, limits knowledge sharing, and introduces interoperability barriers that reduce the value of otherwise successful solutions.

Fragmented todayGreat solutions exist, but they can't see, or reach, one another.
Vision & Mission

What we are working towards

Vision

A built environment where data solutions initiatives are accessible, connected, and valued by all as a foundation for collaboration.

Mission

CBEDS helps great work become visible, connected, and used across the ecosystem.

The objective is not to create another hub, but to strengthen the connections between existing efforts.
Why this matters

The sector's most ambitious goals depend less on building new solutions, and more on enabling existing ones to work together.

Our Approach

An approach built for complexity

The built environment is a complex, emergent system, where cause and effect only become clear in hindsight. So CBEDS does not impose a fixed blueprint. We follow a probe, sense and respond approach, drawn from the Cynefin framework for complex problems: try small things, learn from what emerges, and build on what works.

01

Probe

Run small, safe to fail experiments, workshops, pilots and mapping, to surface what already exists and what the sector genuinely needs.

02

Sense

Read the patterns that emerge: how efforts relate, where they overlap, and where the fragmentation really lies.

03

Respond

Amplify what works, strengthening connections, aligning efforts and reusing what is proven, rather than starting over.

The benefits

CBEDS helps create the conditions for collective impact

Without visibility and coordination, progress remains fragmented and difficult to scale. By linking the work that is already out there, CBEDS:

Reduces duplication

Less wasted effort by making current work easier to find.

Improves interoperability

Better knowledge sharing across tools and teams.

Accelerates innovation

Faster progress through reuse and collaboration.

Strengthens the foundation

A firmer base for transformation across the sector.

Turn isolated successes into a connected ecosystem
