A network that connects itself

CBEDSynergy is where collaboration happens. CBEDS sits at the centre, the organisations around it form the network, connected to one another, not to us. We create the conditions; the connections are theirs.

CBEDS Alliance Charter

A shared commitment to connect built environment data sharing initiatives and working with a “Best for Project and Sector” mindset.

Non-binding: this Charter is a good-faith statement of shared intent. It is not a legally binding contract and creates no legal or financial obligations; it does not override members’ own agreements, procurement rules, or competition and IP obligations.

Why this Charter

The built environment has strong data-sharing activity, but it stays fragmented. Low visibility of who is doing what weakens coordination; weak coordination limits interoperability; without interoperability, outputs are not used and value is not proven; and without proven value, engagement stays low — which further reduces visibility. This self-reinforcing “fragmentation stuck loop” keeps the sector disconnected despite real effort. CBEDS — the Centre for Built Environment Data Solutions — is a network of networks that connects existing initiatives without replacing them. By signing, members commit to break this loop and to decide and act Best for Project and Sector: what is best for the shared outcome and the wider sector, inside and beyond their own boundaries.

Our commitments: five ways to break the fragmentation loop

By signing, each member commits to at least three of these five, and to the shared behaviours below.

Choose at least three.

How we work

We put the collective goal, and the wider sector, ahead of any single organisation. We keep an open book with no blame, sharing data, progress and problems honestly and fixing issues together rather than assigning fault; we share pain and gain so benefits, costs and risks fall fairly across members; we act as one team with an aligned strategy, common terms, goals and KPIs, and the right partners at the table; and we deliver rather than just discuss, preferring simple actions with a named owner and a deadline.

Our rhythm: the Alliance Meeting every 4 months (three times a year)

  • Each member brings and delivers: progress against last cycle’s commitments; one concrete contribution (a CBEDSync listing updated, an MoU, a standard adopted, data shared, or a use case tested); blockers needing joint action; and updated numbers for the shared measures.
  • The meeting produces: an agreed action list with owners and deadlines; an updated risk-and-reward (pain/gain) view; and key decisions logged on a Best-for-Project-and-Sector basis.
  • We measure success by: initiatives connected and duplication avoided · standards jointly adopted · use cases delivered and outputs actually used · engagement and reach across the sector.

Joining the alliance

Open to any initiative or organisation in the built-environment data-sharing ecosystem, of any size. To join: review the Charter, appoint a named lead, and sign. New members are listed on CBEDSync and welcomed into the CBEDS network of networks.

Your name, organisation and the date, and your email if you give one, are sent to the CBEDS team at UCL, who use them to record this signature, confirm it with you, and list your organisation on CBEDSync. Your email is not published.
